Wałbrzych to miasto w województwie dolnośląskim, nad rzeką Pełcznicą. Wałbrzych położony jest w Sudetach Środkowych, w paśmie Gór Wałbrzyskich oraz na Pogórzu Zachodniosudeckim.
Historia miasta zaczyna się już w 1191 roku, za czasów panowania Bolesława Wysokiego (Książę Śląski). Istniała wtedy leśna osada słowiańska, która z czasem przemieniła się w gródek warowny, gdzie osiedlili się koloniści.
Wałbrzych posiada ciekawą infrastrukturę miasta, znajduje się tam wiele konstrukcji takich jak zamki, pałace czy kościoły. Warto wspomnieć o Starym Mieście (układ urbanistyczny z XII wieku), Zamku Książ i Zamku Stary Książ, kolegiacie pw. Najświętszej Maryi Panny Bolesnej i Świętych Aniołów Stróżów, zamku "Nowy Dwór", kościele pw. MB Bolesnej, cmentarzu żydowskim, ratuszu (plac Magistracki), Pałacu Tielscha, Pałacu Albertich, mauzoleum, tunel kolejowy (najdłuższy tunel w Polsce), muzeum Gross-Rosen, zabytkowych kamienicach i domach czy gmach Urzędu Miasta (przy ulicy Matejki).
Na terenie miasta działają instytucje kultury takie jak Filharmonia Sudecka, Wałbrzyski Ośrodek Kultury, Biblioteka Pod Altanami, Teatr Dramatyczny im. Jerzego Szaniawskiego, Teatr Lalki i Aktora, Kino Cinema City oraz Kino Apollo.
W Wałbrzychu są 2 parki krajobrazowe, w tym Książański Park Krajobrazowy i Park Krajobrazowy Sudetów Wałbrzyskich oraz 7 parków miejskich. Po stronie zachodniej Wałbrzycha znajduje się Obszar Chronionego Krajobrazu Natura 2000 - Kopuła Chełmca. Rzeka która przepływa przez Wałbrzych (Pełcznica), wypływa ze Srebrnego Źródła (ze szczytu "Borowa") i zajmuje 18 kilometrów długości miasta.
Wałbrzych to rozwinięty ośrodek przemysłowy (budowlany, chemiczny, motoryzacyjny, spożywczy czy odzieżowy). W mieście działały kiedyś trzy kopalnie węgla kamiennego, obecnie aktywna jest tylko jedna kopalnia - koksownia Victoria.
